August 22, 2008, Newsletter Issue #178: Wild Birdseed Cookies

Tip of the Week

2 cups flour
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 cup sugar
2/3 cup pure rendered suet
2 eggs
2/3 cup of Wild Bird Seed Blend
Elbow Macaroni
2 egg whites for wash
Bird-shaped cookie cutters
Twine or string to hang cookies

Sift dry ingredients together. Cut in shortening with pastry blender until crumbly. Add eggs until well blended. Add birdseed, and knead until smooth.

Wrap ´dough´ in waxed paper and plastic bag and chill for an hour or overnight.

Roll out on a lightly floured surface to 1/4" thickness. Cut out shapes with a lightly floured cookie cutter.

Press one elbow macaroni toward the top of each cookie for easy hanging. Brush cookies with slightly beaten egg whites, and press more birdseed over the top of each cookie. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake at 325 degrees F for 12-15 minutes or until cookies harden. Cool, and hang in a tree.
