4 cups flour
1/4 cup sugar
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 cup margarine
2 cups raisins
1-1/2 cups buttermilk
1 egg, beaten
1 tsp baking soda
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
Sift together flour, sugar, salt and baking powder. Cut in margarine until tiny crumbs. Stir in raisins.
In a separate bowl, combine buttermilk, egg and baking soda. Stir into dry mixture just until moist.
Put in a greased loaf pan. Cut a 1/2" deep slash across the top in the form of a cross. Bake at 375 degrees for 45 to 50 minutes, or until golden brown.
